I received this for Valentine’s Day from one of my students. It’s so nice to know I am not lame. 🙂

The Windmill

One of the assignments I gave my class was to bring in an object that somehow symbolized their culture, heritage, ancestry, family tradition, something that shaped them growing up, etc. I always like to do the creative work along with the students, so I brought in my grandmother’s windmill music box, and the following poem resulted.

The Windmill

By Heidi M. Bauer

Blocked out the pain
the music

Blocked out the smoke
the music

Blocked out the criticism
the music

Blocked out the servitude
the music

Blocked out his voice
the music

As the spinning blades
cut through the terror

Grandma kept all the boxes
lined up in a row

Dusted and polished
and on display

Not like the secrets
that lurked underneath the notes

Filled with cobwebs
a cobweb of lies

Blocked out the nightmare
the music survives
